Why You Should Wash Your Hair Upside Down

It's a small shift, but it makes a huge difference.

Most of us focus shampoo on the top and sides of the head, while the underside of the scalp—especially the nape—gets less attention. Flipping your hair forward makes the entire scalp easier to reach and helps shampoo distribute more evenly.

What happens when the underside is missed?

The underside of the scalp sits beneath the weight of the hair, making it easy to overlook during shampooing. When those areas are not cleansed thoroughly, you may experience:

  • buildup
  • scalp congestion
  • excess oil
  • itchiness
  • a scalp that doesn't feel completely clean

How to wash your hair upside down:

1. Fully saturate your hair
Let the water reach the entire scalp, including the nape and underside.

2. Flip your hair forward
Bend forward and allow the hair to fall away from the back of the scalp.

3. Apply shampoo to the scalp
Focus on the roots rather than the lengths, paying extra attention to the nape and underside.

4. Massage gently
Use the pads of your fingers to work the shampoo across the entire scalp. Avoid scratching with your nails.

5. Rinse thoroughly
Let the water carry away loosened oil, sweat and buildup.

6. Shampoo a second time
Repeat for a complete cleanse, focusing on the top, sides, nape and underside of the scalp.

7. Return upright slowly
Gently squeeze out excess water, then condition as usual.

A simple shift, with a big difference.

It is such a simple shift, but every time we share this little secret with customers, we hear the same thing: it is a complete game changer.

Once you feel the difference of cleansing the entire scalp—not just the top—it is hard to go back.

Try it during your next wash and let us know what you notice!
