Can You Put Conditioner on Your Scalp?

The conditioner “rule” we like to break.

You’ve probably heard the rule: conditioner belongs on your ends, not your scalp.

But that rule depends on the conditioner.

Heavy, coating formulas can weigh down the roots. A conditioner made for the scalp can replenish moisture without leaving hair greasy or heavy.

Your scalp is skin, too—and it needs moisture.

Why does your scalp need conditioner?

Your scalp is skin.

Just like the skin on the rest of your body, its moisture barrier can become dry, tight, irritated, or depleted.

Shampoo removes oil, sweat, buildup, and debris. Conditioner helps replenish moisture afterward, leaving the scalp comfortable and the hair soft and nourished.

For anyone who experiences a dry, tight, or uncomfortable-feeling scalp after washing, conditioning the scalp may be an especially helpful part of the ritual.

Why are we told not to put conditioner on our roots?

Most of us learned to condition “from the ears down” for a reason: many conditioners are rich in silicones and heavy coating ingredients that can build up at the roots and congest the scalp.

That’s not how ours are formulated.

Under Luna conditioners are made for scalp-to-ends use, so you can replenish moisture at the root without worrying about heaviness or buildup.

When should you apply conditioner to your scalp?

Conditioning the scalp can be especially helpful when it feels:

  • Dry or tight — to help replenish moisture after cleansing
  • Depleted — especially after frequent washing, sun, swimming, or environmental stress
  • Itchy or uncomfortable — when dryness is contributing to that tight, irritated feeling
  • Flaky — when flakes are related to dryness rather than excess buildup
  • Oily — even oily scalps can become dehydrated. Our conditioners are scalp-friendly conditioner + can help restore moisture after cleansing without necessarily making the roots feel heavier

The goal isn’t to add weight—it’s to replenish moisture.

Under Luna conditioners are made for scalp-to-ends use, so you can care for your scalp and strands in one step.

How to apply conditioner to your scalp:

After shampooing, apply your favorite Under Luna Conditioner directly to the scalp and work it through the lengths and ends.

  • Massage gently into the scalp with your fingertips
  • Focus a little more product wherever your scalp feels dry, tight, or depleted
  • Work the remaining conditioner through your lengths and ends
  • Let it sit for a few minutes
  • Rinse thoroughly

If your ends need more moisture, use a little extra there. If your scalp needs more support, spend a little more time working the conditioner into the roots.

Healthy-looking hair starts with the scalp underneath it. Conditioning it can be one simple way to care for the whole environment your hair grows from.
